African Grey Congos:

African Grey Congos are considered the smartest of the Parrot/Bird world. With such high intelligence, comes high demands & responsibilities. These birds are very inquisitive and learn quickly. Scientific research has found their intelligence to be that of a four year old human child. Their ability to communicate with us humans is second to none. They not only mimic noises and sounds around them perfectly, but human speech and it's meanings (so watch your what you say around them!)... making them one of the most sought after parrots. As such, they must be provided with plenty to do through out the day. Toys such as puzzles are perfect and greatly enjoyed by these parrots. Plenty of 'out of the cage' time is needed as well. Greys require a species specific diet higher in protein and calcium than most parrots.  It's no small feat to bring one of these birds into your home and provide them with a wonderful, healthy (emotional as well as physical)  long life that they deserve. They have been known to become neurotic pluckers when things go wry in their lives. Often times, something as simple as a change in their diet or environment might be enough to stop such behavior. mating stress is NOT usually the cause. Too often I've heard bird owners tell me they need to set up their bird to mate because the bird's exhibiting self destructive behaviors. Sometimes it seems, it's asking too much for the owner to spend a little more time with their bird who has often come to see their human as their 'mate'. With this said ... let's bring on the pictures of the Congos at Majestic Wings Aviary!!

We currently have 2 Greys here in our aviary 'Achilles' & 'Paco'.

~'Achilles' ...
was brought home @ 5 weeks old... So I finished his hand feeding which lasted an eternity if you ask me ... ask Achilles? Not long enough! LOL .. he still begs for formula when he sees mommy has a syringe in hand. He just LOVES peanut butter on a spoon when he's been a good boy and has quite the 'attitude' shared by most congos. If he doesn't get his way he turns into a brat and lets you know things need to change quickly! Typically most Greys aren't snuggly, though sometimes he tends to lean over and demand I rub his head for a few before he changes his mind and reverts back to his stubborn stand-off-ish ways. Preferring me, when someone else is too close, he'll let me know fluffing his neck feathers and becoming a bit hostile. A great talker, as well as mimmicking every sound around him to the point I have to look at my phone before I answer it, to know if it's actually ringing or Achilles 'calling' lol! He views me as his mate and is steadily becoming mature .. often times exhibiting mating behavior such as lowering his wings, shaking, clucking & trying to feed me by regurgitation. He's an absolute doll and I wouldn't trade him for the world!

~'Paco' came to us as a 'rescue' at approx. 10 years old. His daddy no longer wanted her so Paco's mommy thought it best to send her to us so that she can continue to be spoiled and loved forever. She is NOT your 'typical' Congo, she LOVES to cuddle in your arms and she'll stay there so long as you rub her from head to toe! She prefers men over women and often will 'trick' you into thinkin she'll let you rub her then getcha! If you're not Rob (her human 'mate') you better watch her eyes and neck feathers even if she seems soooo sweet, before you send your fingers in to rub her ... she takes no hostages! Her vocabulary is always increasing thanks to the birds she's around and our big family. She 'answers' Achille's 'phone calls' with pleasure. First thing in the morning, she's quick to tell you "Good morning!" .. grab your car keys or the front door? "Buh Bye!" .. she's truly blessed our home with her wonderful personality.
